Newest Update on Anthem Data Breach

This is an update with new information on the Anthem BlueCross BlueShield data breach. If you’ve missed the previous posts regarding this breach, please refer to the background below for additional information. Anthem will issue a press release publishing the number of members affected by the cyber attack. In early March, Anthem will begin sending letters to affected members. Because of high volume, the letters will be sent out over the course of several weeks. Listen, none of this makes any sense. If your group has members affected by the data breach, BCBS will notify you in advance.

Update on Anthem’s Data Breach

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has reported additional developments following the data breach experienced by Anthem, Inc. BCBST and Anthem are separate companies, with completely distinct operations and information systems. BCBST’s information systems and member data were not directly attacked.

BCBS of TN Update on Anthem Security Breach

On February 4, 2015, the insurance provider, Anthem Inc. reported that a database containing as many as 80 million records of customers and employees was hacked. The stolen information included names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, residential and email addresses, and other information such as income data. Anthem has stated no credit card information was stolen. “BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and Anthem Inc. are distinct companies with separate operations and information systems. We want to stress that BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee’s information systems and member data were not directly attacked. Nonetheless, BCBST has taken additional precautions to secure their members’ protected health information in light of the attack.”

EEOC Files Third Lawsuit Against Employer’s Wellness Program

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed its third lawsuit this year against wellness programs that impose financial penalties on employees who do not comply with the program’s criteria. Honeywell International, the EEOC’s largest target thus far, was named in a lawsuit filed on October 27, 2014. The EEOC has also filed lawsuits against Orion Energy Systems in August, and Flambeau, Inc. at the end of September.
